Cassian, John

Cassian, John
(c. 360–435)
   Saint, Theologian and Devotional Writer.
As a young man, Cassian joined a monastery in Bethlehem but he left to study the ascetic way of life in Egypt. In c. 402 he was ordained deacon in Constantinople and then visited Rome where he was invited to write a refutation of the opinions of nestorius. Eventually he founded a monastery in Marseilles. His best-known work was his ‘Institutes’, in which he laid down rules for life in a religious community. This was the foundation for many later Rules, including that of St Benedict. He believed that the aim of the religious life was the contemplation of God; to this end it was necessary to study the Bible, withdraw from earthly striving, to practise love and humility and to avoid all occasions of temptation. Cassian is recognised as a saint in the Eastern, but not the Western Church.
